What should I do during a dental emergency?
Below are some of the more common dental emergencies that can occur and what to do at the moment until you see the dentist:
- Severe toothache. There may be several different reasons for a toothache to occur, including infection that requires antibiotics and immediate treatment. Take pain medication to alleviate discomfort and call our office.
- Chipped or broken tooth. If possible, save the pieces that have been broken from the natural tooth structure and bring them with you to the dental office. Leaving this issue untreated can cause internal damage and increase the risk of infection of the inner canals.
- Lost or damaged restoration. Lost or broken crowns, bridges, veneers, and fillings need to be treated as soon as possible to protect the tooth from infection. Emergency treatment at our Edison, NJ, area practice is encouraged.
- Bleeding and swelling. Swelling and bleeding may occur with an infected tooth or after an injury or trauma to the mouth. Pain and other complications can happen if you do not visit an emergency dentist as soon as possible.
