What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots usually made from titanium or another strong, biocompatible material. These tiny posts are placed in the jawbone where your tooth is missing. Once they’ve healed, they will hold a crown or bridge in your mouth.

Implants are fixed in place and do not need to be removed. You can chew and talk without worrying about anything moving around. We usually recommend them if you have lost a tooth due to injury, decay, or gum disease.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

The process starts with a consultation with one of our dentists, who will look at your mouth to decide if implants are right for you. If everything checks out, the first step is placing the implant post into your jaw.

Your dentist makes a small opening in the gum to access the bone beneath, then carefully inserts the implant. This will serve as the root for your new tooth.

We perform this procedure under local anesthesia, so you will be awake but shouldn’t feel pain. You can expect mild soreness for a few days that can be eased with over-the-counter pain medication.

The healing process usually takes a few months. During this time, the implant fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration, which will be the foundation for your new tooth. After healing, we add the abutment to the implant. This small connector holds the crown or bridge securely in place.

The final step is attaching the crown or bridge. It will match your natural teeth in color, shape, and size. Once everything’s in place, you’ll have a full, strong smile.
