At Gentle Dental, we’re all about giving our patients from Edison and the surrounding areas a smile they’re proud to show off. Many of our cosmetic dentistry procedures take just a single appointment. Things such as in-office teeth whitening, bonding, and replacing silver amalgam fillings with composite resin only take a single appointment. Porcelain veneers require two appointments.
Invisalign could qualify as improving your smile in a big way, but it’s not an instant thing. Straightening your teeth with the clear acrylic aligner trays of this innovative orthodontic system usually takes about one year for most patients.
Our patients love Invisalign because they don’t have to suffer through the metal bands, wires, and pesky rubber bands of traditional braces. So, if you’re considering straightening your teeth, or those of a teenager in your house, in this second blog of a New Year, let’s get into some advantages of Invisalign at Gentle Dental.
What are the advantages of Invisalign?
The advantages are clear, excuse the pun. First, Invisalign moves the patient’s teeth without anyone knowing. This is because the aligners are made of clear plastic and are virtually invisible when on the teeth. Even a person talking to you in close proximity can’t see the aligners on your teeth. Contrast this to the glaring metal on display with traditional braces.
Second, Invisalign is comfortable. Metal bands rub on your cheeks and lips. Wires poke your tongue and cheeks. Monthly “adjustments” usually call for some ibuprofen afterwards to deal with the serious aching. If your teenager plays an instrument or sports, metal bands can be a serious pain.
Third, keeping your teeth clean with braces is quite difficult. Removing food stuck on the bands and under wires requires diligence. To floss, you need a threader. With Invisalign, you simply remove the trays and brush and floss your teeth normally.
Fourth, braces limit some foods you can eat. No corn on the cob. No really sticky or chewy foods. With Invisalign, you simply take out the trays and eat whatever you please.
Why should I feel confident in Invisalign as an orthodontic treatment?
When Invisalign was first introduced, there was a good deal of skepticism about this new method for moving teeth. The thinking was, “How can these clear acrylic trays move the teeth as effectively as metal bands, wires, and rubber bands?”
Time has shown the folly of that thinking. While Invisalign cannot address severe tooth movement needs, it is great for moderate conditions such as closing gaps, fixing overbites and underbites, and crowding.
Invisalign was approved by the FDA in 1998. In the two decades plus that Invisalign has been moving teeth, the results have been dramatic. That’s why Invisalign has become more and more popular. To date, over 10 million people have used Invisalign. As long as the patient wears their aligners for at least 20-22 hours every day, Invisalign can deliver awesome results without any of the hassle and irritation of traditional braces.
