Dentures Beyond the Cartoons

Dentures Edison, NJDentures need a new PR firm. The image most people have of dentures is either the wind-up chompers from novelty stores or cartoons where granny’s dentures come out, and she’s left to gum the world to death.

In reality, modern dentures are better constructed and fit better, and they provide a great alternative for replacing many or all of a person’s teeth on the upper or lower jaw or both. At Gentle Dental we place dentures for our patients.

The alternative is no good

The American Dental Association notes that 36 million Americans do not have any teeth left, although some think the number is even higher. Of older people, ages 65 to 74, over one quarter have lost all of their teeth.

This is a problem not just of aesthetics, but of diet. Sure, no one likes to smile without any teeth to show off. But more important is the foods the person avoids because they can’t chew them. Healthy fruits and nuts are avoided due to the missing teeth. This can leave big holes in your nutrition.

Dentures can replace the missing teeth

Dentures are prosthetics that take the place of your missing teeth. Full sets of dentures are typically supported by the tissues within the oral cavity and may be attached to either the mandibular or the maxillary arch of the mouth.

While not as fancy as George Washington’s false teeth made from lead, human teeth, cow teeth, and elephant ivory, today’s dentures are far different. The teeth of the dentures are typically made from various types of resin or porcelain. Porcelain is preferable because it closely resembles natural tooth enamel, but it is more expensive than resin. Acrylic resin has become more popular. Acrylic adheres more securely to the denture base, and it is easier to adjust to achieve the correct occlusion than harder porcelain teeth. The disadvantage of resin is that the teeth wear faster than porcelain teeth. Dentures made from acrylic resin may need to be replaced every five to eight year.

Dentures require a certain framework to support and anchor the false teeth. This is called a full or partial plate. It is usually made from rigid acrylic resin or a type of flexible nylon polymer.

Full or partial

Depending on how many teeth you are missing, the Gentle Dental team will opt for either full or partial denture. Full dentures encompass the entire arch. Partial dentures are used to replace some missing teeth. This could also be accomplished in a superior fashion with dental implants, but many implants can be expensive.

Partial dentures can clip in and out, or they can be anchored into the jawbone by strategically placing dental implants to act as anchors.
