Foods to Avoid If You Have TMJ Disorder

Woman holding her cheek and experiencing pain in her jaw from TMJ If you have TMJ disorder, you already know that chewing certain foods can leave your jaw sore and tired. At Gentle Dental Care in Edison, New Jersey, our experienced dentists see this every day and know how much it can affect you. Dr. Brad Strober, Dr. Cynthia Butcofski, and Dr. Rebecca Kucharsky Hiess are here to help you find ways to ease your discomfort, starting with changes to what you eat.

How Food Choices Affect TMJ Disorder

The temporomandibular joint connects your jawbone to your skull. It’s what allows you to talk, chew, and yawn.

When this joint becomes irritated, certain foods can make the pain worse by forcing you to chew harder, which strains the muscles around the joint.

Foods to Avoid If You Have TMJ Disorder

Making a few small changes to your diet can help take the pressure off of your jaw to help you feel more comfortable. Here are the foods you may want to skip if you are dealing with TMJ symptoms:

  • Chewy foods: Gum, bagels, and tough cuts of meat can overwork your jaw muscles.
  • Hard or crunchy foods: Nuts, raw carrots, apples, and pretzels require extra force to break down.
  • Sticky foods: Caramel, gummy candies, and taffy can make your jaw work overtime.
  • Oversized bites: Large sandwiches or burgers may force your mouth open wider than is comfortable.

When you stick to softer foods like yogurt, smoothies, fish, or cooked vegetables, you may notice your jaw starting to feel better.

Managing TMJ Symptoms Beyond Diet

Changing your diet is only part of managing TMJ disorder. Gentle stretching, stress reduction, and being mindful about teeth grinding can also make a difference. If pain continues, our dentists can recommend additional treatments, such as custom bite splints, physical therapy, medication, or even Botox for jaw tension.

In more severe cases, surgical options may be discussed, though most people find relief with non-surgical therapies.
